How strict is this scanner ( self )

in Northern CA and scoping the clubs in sacramento, noticed that they all pretty much use a PatronScan. It's not a box scanner right? just for future reference, box scanners suck the ID in. It’s a little box and it’s like putting a parking slip at a parking garage in, except with an ID
