How do you make steampunk outfits fit a modern lifestyle? ( self )

I love the steampunk look, but I just can’t seem to make it work in my everyday life. I tried wearing a top hat to a friend’s birthday party, but all I got were weird looks. I mean, how do people wear these clothes without looking like they're playing dress-up all the time? I need something that’s got the aesthetic but still fits into a normal life without making me look like I’m trying too hard.
