Gas stations are usually pretty easy. Your OIS barcode should scan. You can check to make sure it does with an app like Scannr, BCS, or PDF147 Scanner. OIS' barcodes should scan, but it's possible it was misprinted, in which case you should ask for a reprint. Gas stations will usually just scan your ID, and if it passes you're good to go. Just don't be visibly shaking or anything else that makes it obvious you're underage. If you're over 18, it can help to buy cigarettes or lottery tickets or something to get used to the process of handing over an ID and all that. Although this is a bit racist, gas stations with Indian clerks are usually easier because they really don't give a fuck in my experience.

Liquor stores are usually more strict with checking IDs. Since they check IDs all day, they have a better idea of what to look for. They may visibly inspect it, ask you some questions, or scan it. It's rare for a liquor store to have a box scanner, but it's possible. Just look for a black box that an ID could be inserted into on the counter. If you think they use a box scanner, don't even try, it's extremely unlikely that your fake will pass.

Grocery stores are very similar to gas stations. The clerk may call over a manager or scan your ID, but usually they don't question it too much unless you look super young/obviously suspicious.

As I mentioned before, box scanners are usually black boxes with a literal slit for the ID to be fully inserted into the box. They're pretty obvious, but also fairly rare for small town stores.

Be confident in your ID, dress kinda nice, and don't be too nervous. You'll be fine.

I’ve never had problems with OIS not scanning. Mine also come up on BCS and PDF 417. I go to gas stations mainly but grocery stores don’t spend all day seeing ids and will almost never have box scanners

Box scanners look like these:

They need to be connected to a computer and plugged into the wall.
