Most brands use a sort of technology that's often used by software like Google books back in the day to scan physical texts into interactive documents. An adapted version of this OCR stuff is used to attach attributes to each piece of text/formatting on the real ID, and if an ID scanned in is coming back with different OCR data, it tells the bouncer to look deeper, which is good enough for most people to say it's fake. It would be possible to make an ID that passed without a "DMV Printer"(????), you would just need a box scanner to practice on an pull data from.

They aren’t hooked up to the dmv they are just measuring it I think checking for some security features that are extremely hard to reproduce and not visible to the naked eye

They're checking for details and features that you wouldn't really be able to see, or just features that aren't checked for by bouncers and are therefore missing on most fakes. They don't store a template in there they just store info about these tiny details and they change them up all the time so if you pass one version well the next version might look for a different set of details.

All the ocr stuff is easily beaten with good automation.
